Chinese Eastern Han Incised Pottery Storage Jar, 25–220 AD stock #JWHhanJar
A finely potted Chinese earthenware storage jar, Eastern Han dynasty (25–220 AD), with a well-proportioned globular body, short collar mouth, and subtle incised decoration encircling the shoulder. The clay fires to a tan/buff tone with areas of darker surface bloom and earthen deposits, consistent with age and long burial. Measures approximately 8.5" H x 9.75" diameter. Age wear and surface encrustations, worm tracks, throughout; minor rim abrasions and small scattered pits/old firing irregularities; no obvious restoration noted.
June’s Thoughts What I love about this Eastern Han jar is its quiet confidence. Pieces like this were originally made for daily storage and household use—purely practical objects—yet the form is so balanced and resolved that it feels sculptural even today. The softly rounded body, the simple collar mouth, and the understated incised banding give it that restrained, early-ceramic character collectors respond to: honest material, purposeful workmanship, and a surface that carries its age beautifully. It’s the kind of object that doesn’t need decoration to hold your attention. |
