Pair Japanese Tokoname Terracotta Vases with Gilt Dragons, 15" stock #JWHtokoPrVas
A matched pair of Japanese Tokoname terracotta vases, each measuring approximately 15 inches high. Formed in iron-rich red clay, the bodies feature Tokoname’s characteristic “aka-yaki” textured surface with applied gilt dragons modeled in relief. The dragons are finely detailed, with articulated scales, claws, and whiskers, and are arranged dynamically around the vessel bodies.
Both vases retain their original gilt Greek-key banding at the rim, along with incised decorative borders separating the textured and smooth clay registers. The interiors are unglazed, consistent with Tokoname production. The pair is well matched in form, decoration, and finish. Very good condition, with expected light surface wear and minor gilt loss consistent with age and handling. No cracks or repairs observed. June’s Thoughts Tokoname ware has always appealed to me for the honesty of its material. The iron-rich red clay has a warmth and density that immediately signals handwork, and these vases show that character beautifully in their textured surfaces and confident forms. Tokoname is, of course, one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, but what I especially appreciate here is how mid-century workshops began to push beyond strictly utilitarian traditions and experiment with more sculptural, decorative expressions. |
