Scottish Beneagles Merlin Falcon Whisky Decanter, Royal Doulton, 1970s stock #JWHfalconDec
A finely modeled Scottish Beneagles porcelain figural whisky decanter depicting a merlin falcon perched on a rocky outcrop, produced for Peter Thomson (Perth) Ltd., Scotland, and manufactured by Royal Doulton, circa 1970s. The modeling is naturalistic and well balanced, with carefully articulated plumage and restrained glazing that allows the form to read as sculpture rather than novelty.
Measuring 6.75" high and in excellent vintage condition, with no chips or cracks observed. Glazing remains glossy and well preserved. The original contents have evaporated over time, which is common for Beneagles decanters of this period. Original base labels are intact with light, expected age wear. June’s Thoughts What I appreciate most about this Beneagles Merlin is the balance between decoration and restraint. While clearly a figural bottle, it was never meant to feel whimsical. The falcon’s proportions, posture, and surface detail are carefully considered, allowing it to read as a small piece of sculpture even when displayed away from a bar setting. During this period, Royal Doulton incorporated the Beswick studio into its production, and you can see that influence here in the confident modeling and finish. It’s the kind of object that feels at home layered into a thoughtful interior rather than set apart as a novelty. |
