AN INCREDIBLE AND RARE SLAVE DOCUMENT FROM PERSON COUNTY, NC. This document is an agreement to rent a slave from the George Glen estate and is dated December 26, 1864, just months before the end of the Civil War. The document reads:

“ #168 Twelve months after date, me or either of us promises to pay E M Holt & J W Parker, executors of H Parker, deceased, late guardians of the heirs of George Glen, deceased, the sum of $100, of the same being for the [heir?] of a Negro $65 by the name of Erasmus, and we further promise to furnish said Negro with two winter woolen suits, two summer suit of clothes, one woolen hat, one blanket, one pair of socks, and one pair of double soled shoes. For value received we [set our hand and] seals this 26 December 1864 witness….”
