19th C Russian Burl Wood Box with Chinese Jade Moth
click for detailed views

This is an exquisite Russian burl wood box with a Chinese white jade moth applied on the top. Well-crafted, the dovetail hinge and edges of the lid fit together so perfectly that when closed, the case appears seamless. There are no straight lines when the box is closed, only soft rounded edges. The handle of the lid is elegantly curved, barely emerging from the edge, a subtle yet very functional design element. Clearly made by a master wood worker, this construction is exactly the same as Peter Carl Faberge burl wood cigarette case. Measures 6" x 4" X 2 inches high. Circa 1880-1920.
