$850.00

$850

A lovely Japanese painting on paper of two men observing the moon. This scroll was sold on consignment by a Japanese dealer named Sakura. According to Sakura and in his opinion, this painting would date from 1800-1849, and is in fair to good condition. All genuine antique scrolls will show signs of wear and discoloration and in some cases damp staining. The painting appears to be salvaged and remounted at least 20 years ago. The scroll fits into a custom made box. Anyone who collect antique scrolls will acknowledge that it is custom in China and Japan to remount scrolls from time to time, as the materials have a tendency to fray and degrade, making it necessary to remove the painting, cleaning it and re-cluing the backside and remount it to a stiff paper backing surrounded by fresh silk decorative elements.

The painting measures 10” (25.4 cm) x 31” (78.7 cm) and the complete scroll measures 14.5” (36.8 cm) x 66” (167.6 cm).
